Why did the economies and cultures of the Northern and Southern colonies/states develop so differently?

Southern Climate


  • warm able to plant a lot of food and was the main sorce of food.(l33tgamer)
  • really hot in the summer and really cold in the winter, humid all year long (SugarQueen)

Plantation system
  • if you were rich you had slaves if not you did the work.(l33tgamer)

Cash crops
  • a crop that is saved for a hard time or the winter months.(l33tgamer)

Indentured labor / Slavery
  • People who would work to make money and become known/ those who had no choice and were forced to work.(l33tgamer)
  • Slaves brought their own culture with them to the South (christian_haroldsen)
  • Half of the the south's population were slaves (SugarQueen)

Northern Climate

  • Colder there were only gardens for your own family, after the south found cotton factorys were made in the North.(l33tgamer)

Primogeniture?
  • right of inheritance belongs exclusively to the eldest son.(l33tgamer)

Industrial Revolution
  • when in the north there was a boom in the industiry that were for people to work in during the time.(l33tgamer)
  • the cotton gin made it so they could grow more cotton, so they neede to build more factories to do stuff with the cotton (alyssamitchell)

Manufacturing / Factories
  • where a group of people split the task up so that work goes faster/ dangurs to your health but people didn't mind.(l33tgamer)
  • mostly girls wanted to work to get away from home (SugarQueen)

Tarrifs
  • females who did work and had to sent there money to there parents,not always the case.(l33tgamer)
  • things bought from other countries cost more then things made inside the country (A_Thompson)
